Interview with T.F. Webb

As we gear up for this amazing event, I’ll be bringing you author interviews so you can get to know the attending authors in more detail! There are lots and lots of authors for you to discover, not to mention, hundreds if not thousands of books! Why not grab a cuppa and sit back and relax! All while hearing more about our writers and their writing lives, inspirations – and maybe even a secret or two!

What is the first thing people should know about you?
I’m an introvert, unless I get to know you or if asked about ‘Raising Hell’. Then I become very animated.

Tell me which genre or trope you are most well-known for writing.
Supernatural fiction

What is one thing people don’t know about you?
When I get some sleep, I have lucid dreams (and nightmares).

Was there a book you wrote that broke you and made you feel like you’d never write again?
Not yet.

Are you one of those authors for whom music is EVERYTHING and without it you’d never write?
I love listening to music before I start writing. Many times it has jogged my memory or prompted something new. A few times it has saved me from those moments when the words won’t flow. I have separate playlists for some of the novels (there are a few that are in the works). I don’t listen to music whilst writing.

Is your desk/writing space tidy or messy?
Tidy. I can’t work if it isn’t.

Who or what inspires you as a writer?
People, places, music, reading the news or books. The newspaper is a great source for finding weird and wonderful stories that can spark the imagination.

The literary world moves fast, but what’s the one thing that never changes?
People’s need to escape into a book.

What is your advice to authors just starting out?
Social media is great for meeting people in the writing community and readers. It is also great for marketing purposes. But, it is also too easy to become distracted from writing when using it. Allot a certain amount of time a day/week to it, and schedule tweets etc. Your time is precious.

What did you always want to be when you were growing up?
A vet (but the sight of blood made me dizzy and nauseous).

Who is your biggest cheerleader?
My family. They’re 100% supportive, and 100% loud about it, bless them.

BONUS Q. Tell me a secret about one of your books that nobody else knows yet!
Initially, I considered making Blaine human, but the power imbalance wouldn’t have worked. I then thought about making him a higher ranking Daemon, but thought he may prefer a challenge. So he is a lower ranking Daemon with powers, just fewer than he could have had. It makes for a more interesting dynamic between him and Cadence.

Thank you so much for your time, Tabatha!

Interview with Carol Kerry-Green

As we gear up for this amazing event, I’ll be bringing you author interviews so you can get to know the attending authors in more detail! There are lots and lots of authors for you to discover, not to mention, hundreds if not thousands of books! Why not grab a cuppa and sit back and relax! All while hearing more about our writers and their writing lives, inspirations – and maybe even a secret or two!

What is the first thing people should know about you?
I’m a 62 year old second-chance author. After a 26-year break, I returned to writing to find the writing world had changed and self-publishing was now a proper thing to do. I’m really enjoying being able to get my work out there and writing once more.

Tell me which genre or trope you are most well-known for writing.
My books are Urban Fantasy, though I’m currently writing a Paranormal Reverse Harem Romance. I also write Science Fiction and Fantasy.

Name a book you’ve written that you wish more people had read, and why.
Living in Shadows – this is book 2 of my Donati Chronicles – I get a lot of people reading book 1 Of Blood and Shadows, but not so many go on to read Book 2.

What is your favourite book (not your own), and why?
Ooh, always a hard one to answer! I have many, but my old favourite is Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. I have read this nearly every year since I was a child. I love Jane’s ability to survive in whichever situation she finds herself in and the insight into the lives of the characters.

Where is your favourite place to go on holiday?
Another hard one, but I love Scotland. We’ve had many holidays there and am hoping to go again this year. I have Scottish ancestry, so it always feels like coming home when I’m there.

Your favourite place to read and/or write?
My local café Planet Coffee is a great place to write. It’s full of comfy sofas, the staff are great and there’s a lot of people-watching to be done. Then switch off and write to my heart’s content.

When you’re as old as Gandalf the Grey, how many books do you think you might have written?
Good question – hmm, lots!

What did you always want to be when you were growing up?
An author.

Who is your biggest cheerleader?
My husband – he’s an author as well, and we met when I ran a writer’s workshop nearly 30 years ago now.

BONUS Q. Tell me a secret about one of your books that nobody else knows yet!
My Donati Chronicles, book 3 Out of the Shadows will end with a wedding! – but it’s not strictly speaking a romance novel.

Interview with Andie M. Long

I talk utter nonsense if I’m nervous.

Tell me which genre or trope you are most well-known for writing.
I’d say paranormal romance, but I also write contemporary and psychological suspense at times.

What is one thing people don’t know about you?
I think people know everything about me – I’m an open book!

Name a book you’ve written that you wish more people had read, and why.
Royal Rebellion my time-travel romance duo. It’s really different. A fae princess ends up having to travel to earth to save her twin sister. Sometimes I don’t know how my mind comes up with these things.

What is your favourite book (not your own), and why?
The Witching Hour by Anne Rice. It has a book within a book and is such an incredible story (first in a trilogy). They’ve just made (or are making) a TV series of it.

Was there a book you wrote that broke you and made you feel like you’d never write again?
None that I’d never write again, but my suspense books take me a long time to write due to the darkness in them and there are years between releases or it would be too much. BULLIED was very loosely based on eighteen months of terror at the hands of a group of teens who decided to bully my son (and extended it to us by smashing our car windscreens etc). It was cathartic to work out my frustrations through my fiction, but also left me extremely drained.

Are you one of those authors for whom music is EVERYTHING and without it you’d never write?
Yes and no. I don’t write to music. I need quiet. But I can hear a song and it can inspire me to write a scene. Taylor Swift is amazing for that.

Is your desk/writing space tidy or messy?
It’s extremely tidy to the annoyance of my other half, as I tend to write sitting on the sofa and not at my desk. The coffee table is strewn with everything that should be upstairs!

What is your advice to authors just starting out?
Get the book written and edited before you start announcing its actual release date. I get it, you’re excited, you want to tell people, but many times when a new author’s book goes to an editor it needs a developmental one and can take a LONG time before it’s actually ready for release. Be developing your social media, your newsletter, and dropping sneak peeks to get readers excited while you get it finished.

If you could live inside any fictional world, where would that be?
Gnarly Fell. I invented my ideal place to live lol. I mean a cupcake café/bookshop. Yes please!

When you’re as old as Gandalf the Grey, how many books do you think you might have written?
I think I might be that old lol! I’ve written over seventy books so far. I’m in my early fifties now.

What did you always want to be when you were growing up?
Miss World hahahahaha. My grandma used to let me wear her long nightgown as a ball gown and interview me. Basically I’m obsessed with crowns and tiaras!

If writing is your full-time job, have you ever been told to get a “proper job”?
No, which is very wise of people to not have said that to me!

BONUS QUESTION: Tell me a secret about one of your books that nobody else knows yet!
I’ve just revealed in book 6 of my Sucking Dead series, Just My Suck, who the mystery ice-cream man is… readers will find out on 12 Jan.

Interview with Marie Anne Cope

As we gear up for this amazing event, I’ll be bringing you author interviews so you can get to know the attending authors in more detail! There are lots and lots of authors for you to discover, not to mention, hundreds if not thousands of books! Why not grab a cuppa and sit back and relax! All while hearing more about our writers and their writing lives, inspirations – and maybe even a secret or two!

What is the first thing people should know about you?
That my writing has been likened to James Herbert, which is a huge honour for me.

Tell me which genre or trope you are most well-known for writing.
My BONDS series is dark paranormal and my TALES FROM A SCARYGIRL short stories are horror, both supernatural and real world. I’ve also written a supernatural children’s book which is aimed at teaching kids it’s okay to be themselves. I am venturing into the contemporary romance genre, though, with my latest novel, CHASING RAINBOWS.

What is one thing people don’t know about you?
I LOVE taking my kit off in front of the camera! I have done a couple of boudoir photoshoots and absolutely loved it. They have been an exercise in self-esteem and learning to see myself how others do, which I’m not good at, as I lack confidence. I shared the first lot of photos, and my story, on social media a few years ago and was surprised and pleased by the response. By sharing myself in that way, I actually helped people. This means the world to me.

What is your favourite book (not your own), and why?
I have two absolute favourites: Bram Stoker’s Dracula – the best love story ever told, and Jeffrey Archer’s Kane and Abel – an age-old rivalry that tugs at your heartstrings.

Are you one of those authors for whom music is EVERYTHING and without it you’d never write?
I wouldn’t say it is EVERYTHING, but it is certainly an important part of my creative process and my writing routine. The music is different depending on the genre I am writing. So, for the BONDS and TALES FROM A SCARYGIRL series, Meat Loaf and his Bat Out of Hell III album kept me company, the album covering every breadth of emotion possible. With CHASING RAINBOWS, it’s been Natalie Imbruglia’s White Lilies Island I tuned in to, the melancholy lament of the songs befitting the story.

Is your desk/writing space tidy or messy?
Most definitely tidy, although I am the post-it queen—and they are the best thing ever invented! As I’m writing, if a thought, idea, or simply a remembrance of something I may need to check on pops into my head, it gets put on a post-it; I’d never remember otherwise. I use post-its for everything… menopause brain! My most creative space in my home houses an antique writing bureau, which is only small, so there is no room for clutter, anyway.

Are you an introvert or extrovert? Or something else…?
Definitely an introvert. The idea of walking into a room, including doing author signings, fills me with absolute terror, but I force myself to do it. I struggle to socialise, though, which isn’t good, as people think I’m being rude; I’m not. I simply find it difficult to make the first move. If someone comes and talks to me, I’m like a limpet, and they run away screaming 😉.

The literary world moves fast, but what’s the one thing that never changes?
The love of a good story. Stories saved me as a child when my parents’ hands were full with my twin brother and sister, and stories are where I go when I am down, need company, or simply need to relax. Stories are my happy place, and I’m not the only one.

What is your advice to authors just starting out?
Get your story out of your head and on to the page, all of it, without stopping to worry about spelling and editing. If you keep stopping to edit what you’ve written, you will never finish. Get it out first, then go back and edit.

Where is your favourite place to go on holiday?
Italy. I adore the place and have been several times and want to go back… when I feel brave enough to face an airport and share a plane with strangers again. I recently completed a six-week taster course in Italian for this very purpose and am considering the longer language course starting in September.

Your favourite place to read and/or write?
I have several favourite places to read, depending on my mood and the time of day—my bed, my faux Chesterfield armchair in my living room, or my cosy chair in my conservatory. As for writing, well, that’s easy. There’s only one winner—the antique writing bureau my late aunt gave me. It’s been in the family for almost a hundred years, and I love to think about what it’s seen and experienced during that time. It’s battered, scratched and broken, and I love it!

Who is the most famous person you’ve ever met?
This is a tough one, and I know I’ll remember the “actual” most famous person I’ve ever met after this interview, but, from a writing point of view, it would be James Patterson. I met him at Theakston’s Old Peculiar Crime Festival in Harrogate in 2019. I also met and had a chat with Sir Ian Rankin, who was lovely.

With James Patterson

Ooooo, and I know not everyone may know who she is… unless they’re a Buffy fan! I met and had my picture taken with Juliet Landau a.k.a. Drusilla (pictured below) at Wales Comic Con in 2018. Which then leads me on to meeting Denis O’Hare, Mark Shepherd, Mark Addy and Eddie McClintock at the same event. Let’s just add that Juliet, Denis and Eddie all now have copies of BONDS!

What did you always want to be when you were growing up?
A banker (don’t ask). That dream lasted six weeks… six weeks of cleaning vomit off the cash machine on a Monday morning was enough for me to know working in a bank was NOT a dream job. I stayed for six years, though!

Interview with Marie Mistry

As we gear up for this amazing event, I’ll be bringing you author interviews so you can get to know the attending authors in more detail! There are lots and lots of authors for you to discover, not to mention, hundreds if not thousands of books! Why not grab a cuppa and sit back and relax! All while hearing more about our writers and their writing lives, inspirations – and maybe even a secret or two!

What is the first thing people should know about you?
If you bring me a cup of tea, I’ll be your friend for life, but if you give me coffee, I’ll bear a silent and unending grudge against you for the rest of all time…

Tell me which genre or trope you are most well-known for writing.
I write fantasy and paranormal reverse harem romances!

What is your favourite book (not your own), and why?
Either Pleasure of a Dark Prince by Kresley Cole or Play of Passion by Nalini Singh. Sorry, but I just can’t pick between the two.

Are you one of those authors for whom music is EVERYTHING and without it you’d never write?
I need it to block out the sounds of everything else, including, ironically, the sound of silence. It gives my hyperactive brain something extra to focus on while the rest of me digs around in my head for the story. I’ve had music that becomes synonymous with certain characters and scenes because I had it on repeat, which I love.

Is your desk/writing space tidy or messy?
It’s controlled chaos. It’s not going to win any awards on Instagram, but I know where everything is and some desk is visible beneath the crap.

Are you an introvert or extrovert? Or something else…?
Highly introverted except with a few close friends. I hate talking on the phone and I struggle to speak to store assistants lol.

What is your advice to authors just starting out?
Join the right Facebook groups, even if it’s just as a lurker. There is a ton of free information out there and the right groups will teach you everything from the importance of good covers and blurbs to how to write to market etc.

Where is your favourite place to go on holiday?
Budapest. Literally the most beautiful city I’ve ever been to.

If you could live inside any fictional world, where would that be?
I’d want to be a Valkyrie in Kresley Cole’s IAD world.

Your favourite place to read and/or write?
On buses or trains, but my dream is to have ‘the chair’ – an armchair so comfy and squishy that I don’t want to write anywhere else. I have yet to find this dream chair, however.

What did you always want to be when you were growing up?
First it was Indiana Jones, then a pop star, then a dancer, then a famous violinist, then a palaeontologist… basically whatever the hero of the movie I watched last was! Eventually, I had a really good English teacher who encouraged my writing, and that was it.

If writing is your full-time job, have you ever been told to get a “proper job”?
I used to get this a lot when I was part-time, but it’s tapered off since I went full-time—mostly because I’m a hermit, which doesn’t give many people the opportunity to pass judgement on my career choices.

BONUS Q. Tell me a secret about one of your books that nobody else knows yet!
I give all my main characters one ‘trait’ that they inherit from me. It started as a way to keep myself separate from them when I was learning how to write, because I didn’t want all my heroines to be cookie cutter copies of me. Now it’s just something I do for fun. It can be anything from eye colour to period cramps, but they all get one thing.

Interview with Adaline Winters

As we gear up for this amazing event, I’ll be bringing you author interviews so you can get to know the attending authors in more detail! There are lots and lots of authors for you to discover, not to mention, hundreds if not thousands of books! Why not grab a cuppa and sit back and relax! All while hearing more about our writers and their writing lives, inspirations – and maybe even a secret or two!

What is the first thing people should know about you?
I’m friendly, but incredibly nervous!

Tell me which genre or trope you are most well-known for writing.
Spicy paranormal romance with alphas and strong heroines.

What is one thing people don’t know about you?
I’m a mathematics teacher – not an English one.

Name a book you’ve written that you wish more people had read, and why.
Whispers of the Dead. I love these characters, so much of my own life is in that book. A set of crazy aunts, a suspicious, possessive male. Maybe I get a little witchy at Halloween too…

What is your favourite book (not your own), and why?
Angel’s Blood – Nalini Singh. This has everything I love, a strong heroine, a broody morally grey hero, and a good mystery plot.

Was there a book you wrote that broke you and made you feel like you’d never write again?
Seducing Hope was my first book, it took a monumental effort to get it out into the world. My readers and the support in the community are what had me coming back.

Are you one of those authors for whom music is EVERYTHING and without it you’d never write?
Yes! Playlists are my life! Every book I have written has one, inspired by the characters and the story.

Is your desk/writing space tidy or messy?
It starts off tidy, then as the day passes it descends into a mess. Chocolate, sweets, fizzy drinks, books, kindle, the dog… they all creep in during the day.

What is your advice to authors just starting out?
Stay true to what you enjoy reading. If you write what you love, your readers will find you, it just takes time and patience.

If you could live inside any fictional world, where would that be?
Harry Potter, without a doubt I need to be a teacher at Hogwarts – I think teaching potions.

When you’re as old as Gandalf the Grey, how many books do you think you might have written?
A hundred. That’s the dream. Also I’d like a conversation with Gandalf at that point to discuss life facts.

Who is your biggest cheerleader?
Without a doubt, my husband.

Interview with Laura Greenwood

As we gear up for this amazing event, I’ll be bringing you author interviews so you can get to know the attending authors in more detail! There are lots and lots of authors for you to discover, not to mention, hundreds if not thousands of books! Why not grab a cuppa and sit back and relax! All while hearing more about our writers and their writing lives, inspirations – and maybe even a secret or two!

Q. What is the first thing people should know about you?
That I live and breathe books. It might be a cliché thing for an author to say, but that doesn’t make it less true. I’ve loved reading since I was a child, and have grown into an adult where there is something book related in every room in the house (including an entire room dedicated to books and swag!)

Q. Tell me which genre or trope you are most well-known for writing.
I don’t really think I’m known for any particular trope, but I mostly write paranormal romance and urban fantasy romance, so likely those – but it probably depends who you ask!

Q. What is your favourite book (not your own), and why?
The Mistborn Trilogy by Brandon Sanderson. A friend got me the first book (The Final Empire) as a 17th birthday present one year and I fell straight into it and devoured the whole series. It was the series that made me fall in love with reading all over again and set me on the trajectory to becoming an author. Plus, the magic system is amazing, and Vin is a great kick ass female character.

Q. Was there a book you wrote that broke you and made you feel like you’d never write again?
I wouldn’t go as far as saying it made me never want to write again, but Stoking The Embers nearly broke me from writing it at all. I went through three completely different first acts before getting it right. I don’t think I’ve ever cried so much over a book – and I’ve written some emotionally draining ones. Luckily, once I figured out the problem (which wasn’t a very complicated one), it went a lot better and the series went on to do well!

Q. Is your desk/writing space tidy or messy?
It depends on the day. Sometimes my desk is super tidy other than the various notebooks that I use to keep track of everything. Other times, it seems to collect a lot of stuff. Then I get the urge to tidy it before I can actually write anything.

Q. Who or what inspires you as a writer?
Everything. Which is not an exaggeration. It can be something as small as a flower or a fleeting shower thought, and suddenly I’ll have a series planned and a main character ready to go. Other times, a cover or writing prompt will inspire me.

Q. Are you an introvert or extrovert? Or something else…?
Definitely an introvert. There’s nothing better than staying in!

Q. The literary world moves fast, but what’s the one thing that never changes?
That it always comes down to good books.

Q. What is your advice to authors just starting out?
Focusing on your craft is one of the most important things you can do. It’s not quite as easy as just writing good books, but writing the best books you can and constantly learning and improving does help.

Q. Your favourite place to read and/or write?
Anywhere. I think I have a mild preference for my desk for writing, but it depends on the day – I’ve written everywhere (including in the shower!)

Q. When you’re as old as Gandalf the Grey, how many books do you think you might have written?
I don’t even know how many books I’ve written now which makes it hard to guess other than saying a lot. I love to write and have so many ideas

Q. What did you always want to be when you were growing up?
So many things! I never really settled on what I wanted to be, but several of the jobs I thought about do appear as jobs for my heroines (for example, Arabella in The Vixen’s Bark is a lawyer, and the witches of Broomstick Bakery own a bakery).

Q. If writing is your full-time job, have you ever been told to get a “proper job”?
I haven’t been told that since being full-time, everyone in my life is very supportive of my work – even if they don’t always understand what I’m talking about! But I was told several times after I decided that it was what I wanted to work towards. I’ve never been more glad for not listening to people.

Q. Who is your biggest cheerleader?
Arizona Tape, both in life and in writing. I wouldn’t be where I am without her support. Whether it’s making me dinner while I’m working on a tough deadline, talking through ideas while walking our dog down the beach, or helping me work through a tough plot tangle, I know she has my back and is cheering me on to succeed.

BONUS QUESTION: Tell me a secret about one of your books that nobody else knows yet!
Flipping Tails For Seasick Mermaids includes two scenes that were written because of things other people said after learning about the project. Arizona Tape insisted that she wanted to see a scene involving a drunk mermaid in the shower, and my cover designer, Ravenborn, had a conversation with me about sushi and mermaids eating it while she was working on the cover. I wrote both into the book!
